Subject: [!] Quadra 840AV/Centris 660AV (Cyclone & Tempest) Announcement
Apple Introduces Quadra 840AV and Centris 660AV
MACWORLD, BOSTON--July 29,1993--Redefining the boundaries of personal
computing once again, Apple Computer, Inc. today announced two new
Macintosh computers that feature a unique combination of
communications and computing capabilities. The Macintosh Quadra 840AV
and Macintosh Centris 660AV bring together telecommunications, video
and speech technologies on a desktop computer for the first time,
offering users new and enhanced ways to communicate.
Apple refers collectively to the set of technologies that distinguish
the new models as "AV Technologies". With AV Technologies, Apple adds
a new dimension to personal computing. For example, with these new
systems, customers can:
-- access voice mail, electronic mail and faxes from the convenience
of a single location on their desktop;
-- use the computer as a hands-free speaker phone and answering machine;
-- communicate using desktop videoconferencing capabilities with
greater ease and at a new price point;
-- use speech for command, control and navigation.
"No other personal computer on the market today can provide all of
these capabilities in one integrated system," said Ian Diery,
executive vice president of Apple's Personal Computer Division. "With
AV Technologies, we are extending the Macintosh platform, and
providing countless new communications possibilities for our
customers and developers. Once again, Apple is raising the industry
standard in personal computing."
Powerful CPUs
Powered by the Motorola 68040 microprocessor and an AT&T 3210 Digital
Signal Processor (DSP), the new Macintosh Quadra 840AV and Centris
660AV computers are powerful personal computers that extend the
capabilities of the Macintosh family with new levels of performance
and functionality.
While the Motorola 68040 microprocessor does general-purpose
computing work, the DSP handles specialized tasks and real-time data
-- including speech, audio, modem, telephone and fax signals -- to
provide customers with advanced performance. Third-party developers
also can tap into the power of the DSP to provide performance
enhancements, such as "plug-in filters" for the popular publishing
program PhotoShop by Adobe.
With AV Technologies, Apple is laying a foundation for future
Macintosh systems. Apple intends to begin integrating these
technologies as appropriate into its next generation Macintosh
products based on the PowerPC RISC chip.
AV TECHNOLOGIES
AV Technologies include the following technology components:
-- Telecommunications
The GeoPort telecommunications architecture featured in the Quadra
840AV and Centris 660AV is a plug-and-play access system for
telecommunications that integrates data, fax and voice telephony.
Unlike a traditional modem, the GeoPort architecture is a software-
based telecommunications architecture. With the GeoPort Telecom
Adapter and associated software, users can immediately connect to
telephone services and support phone calling and answering, as well
as send and receive data and fax.
The GeoPort Telecom Adapter will be sold separately. At introduction,
the adapter will support analog services at 9600 bits per second
(bps). Apple is also working with third parties to offer additional
GeoPort adapters for PBX and ISDN services in the future.
-- Digital Video
The new Macintosh AV models feature a rich video and graphics
architecture, permitting seamless display of full-motion video from
sources such as VCRs, camcorders and laserdiscs, plus the
digitization and capture of single frames as pictures or video
sequences. For video-in, all major standards are supported--NTSC, PAL
and SECAM--and composite and S-video ports are provided.
The Macintosh AV series' video-out capabilities make it possible to
connect to a regular television, which allows users greater access to
inexpensive large screen TV for presentations--without the cost and
complexity of additional hardware circuitry and equipment to support
the connection. At the same time, business and education users will
find it easy to create inexpensive presentation materials by simply
connecting their VCR and using their Macintosh to print a
presentation to videotape.
The sophisticated video capabilities of the new Macintosh AV models,
when combined with GeoPort and built-in Ethernet networking
capabilities, enable a new class of collaborative applications for-
document sharing and local area network (LAN)-based videoconference
capabilities. As ISDN becomes more pervasive, Apple believes these
built-in video and telecommunications capabilities will open more
cost-effective ways to communicate with electronic desktop
videoconferencing over wide area networks (WANs).
-- Speech
Equipped with Apple's PlainTalk speech technology, the Quadra 840AV
and Centris 660AV are the first mainstream personal computers to
offer both speech recognition and text-to-speech capabilities as a
standard user interface extension, complementing today's keyboard and
mouse. The first release of PlainTalk supports North American English
only.
The PlainTalk speech recognition system offers a robust speaker-
independent, continuous speech system for voice commands. Users can
manipulate standard Macintosh menu commands, and streamline computing
tasks with applications that take advantage of PlainTalk. Or they can
create their own speech-activated commands, using either AppleScript
or QuickKeys as a scripting engine. Both technologies come bundled
with the new systems. The latter is licensed from CE Software.
With PlainTalk's text-to-speech system, Apple delivers a standard way
for applications to synthesize a human voice. Today, this capability
is particularly useful in applications such as language instruction
and proofreading. In the future, with third-party applications, users
also will be capable of accessing electronic mail or faxes from a
remote location over their voice mail and have the text of messages
read to them.
"Although it represents the first generation of speech technology,
PlainTalk is a robust speech engine that will grow in richness," said
Dr. Kai-Fu Lee, Apple's chief speech technology scientist. "We hope
to learn from real users' experience as they explore the benefits of
speech in mainstream settings and provide valuable feedback on future
speech product enhancements and development."
Product Specifications
Based on a 40 MHz Motorola 68040 microprocessor, as well as a 66MHz
AT&T 3210 Digital Signal Processor (DSP), the Macintosh Quadra 840AV
becomes the highest performance Macintosh in the line. With a
balanced mix of high performance and expandability, the Quadra 840AV
is well suited to designers, publishers and media authors, engineers,
scientists and power users. Expandable from 8MB of DRAM to 128MB, the
Quadra 840AV features four standard expansion bays for internal
storage, including two 3.5-inch bays for hard drives or removable media,
and two 5.25-inch bays for removable devices. Offering up to 2MB of
VRAM, the Quadra 840AV supports 24-bit color on displays up to 16 inches
and 16-bit color on 21-inch displays.
The Macintosh Centris 660AV is the highest performance offering in
Apple's midrange line and is an ideal system for educator, trainers,
business professionals and telecommuters. Powered by a 25 MHz Motorola
68040 microprocessor, as well as a 55 MHz AT&T 3210 DSP, the Macintosh
Centris 660AV is expandable from 8MB of DRAM to 68MB. For internal
storage, the Centris 660AV provides one 5.25-inch bay for removable
devices. The Centris 660AV offers up to 1MB of VRAM for supporting
16-bit color on displays up to 16 inches and 8-bit color on 21-inch
displays.
Both systems come standard with Ethernet and feature the fastest
implementation of NuBus ever, NuBus 90. NuBus 90 transfers data up
to four times faster than the existing Macintosh NuBus
implementations. The Quadra 840AV comes equipped with three high-
speed, 13-inch NuBus slots and the Centris 660AV supports one 7-inch
NuBus slot via an optional NuBus adapter. In addition, both models
support a Digital Audio Video (DAV) connector that provides a high-
speed path to and from the raw digitized video and audio data
produced by the computer. The DAV slot can be used for real-time
audio and video hardware compression cards such as JPEG, MPEG, DVI
and H.261.
The new systems also support 16-bit stereo audio input and audio
output at various sample rates including 44.1kHz and 48kHz for
outstanding quality audio.
Accessories and Applications
The Apple PlainTalk Microphone and software that supports North
American English voice recognition and text-to-speech will be shipped
standard along with the new AV Macintosh computers in the United
States. Outside the United States, the Apple PlainTalk Software Kit
and Apple PlainTalk Microphone can be purchased separately. The
GeoPort Telecom Adapter is sold separately, with a U.S. suggested
retail price (SRP) of $129.
For an introductory period in the United States, Apple is bundling a
number of applications on the hard drive of the new systems, to make
the new AV Technologies useful out of the box. These include: Apple
Phone, a screen-based phone application developed by Apple; ExperFax
by ExperVision, a fax-to-text conversion application; FusionRecorder
by VideoFusion, an application that provides users with the
capability to record video and high-quality 16-bit audio; and ES.F2F,
a LAN-based videoconferencing application by The Electronic Studio.

We at Pangea Software believe in the "old" shareware ideology that shareware
should cost pennies and have no strings attached. Recently Mac shareware fees
have exceeded costs of actual packaged software, and we think that stinks.
For this, our first Mac shareware game, we are only asking: $5
We humbly request that instead of paying us, you send the money to the
American
Cancer Society. Please tell them why you are donating, and please write or
email us to tell us if you have donated - we want to know if we are making a
difference. We also are VERY interested in YOUR ideas for future shareware
games. Our survival depends on your support. It is our intention to produce
an
entire line of shareware games for the Mac. We are aiming to crank one out
every few weeks, but we need your help. Any assistance you can offer in terms
of ideas, equipment, tech support, etc., would be great!
Please notify us of any bugs (no pun intended) or system incompatibilites so
that future games will work correctly. We are not yet official Apple
developers, so our access to information is limited. Any technical help is
greatly
appreciated.
Copy and distribute this program all you want. Shareware distributors are
authorized to sell this program for no more than $5. Anyone wishing to sell
the
program for a higher price must receive written permission from Pangea
Software.
HOW TO PLAY
Bloodsuckers is a shooting gallery type game where your goal is to protect
your
arm from being sucked into oblivion by hoards of blood-thirsty insects.
The mouse moves your hand around the screen. Press the button to swat at a
bug. On the right of the screen are two meters: a pain meter and a blood
meter. The Pain Meter begins to go up when the first bug bites your arm. It
cannot be stopped. The Blood Meter decreases as long as bugs are sucking on
you.
The more bugs there are sucking, the faster the meter goes down. When the
blood meter runs out, you are dead.
Some bugs are easier to hit than others, and some bugs
may take more than one hit to kill. When the screen becomes full of bug guts,
it may be difficult to see that a bug is sucking on your arm.
At the end of each wave you will recieve bonus blood based on your pain
meter.
The less pain, the more blood you get.
At the end of each level there is a timed bonus round where you must pick up
as
much blood as possible in the given time. You do not need to swat blood, just
wave your hand over it to pick it up.

=======
This is a HyperCard 2.1 stack called "MandelMusic" -- a little project
that we worked on this summer to explore the relationship between math,
music, and graphics. Alas, there's no graphic of the Mandelbrot fractal
in this stack, only the raw data (code included, though). The stack
converts the data into musical notes, based on how you define "the
scale." MandelMusic has a variety of ways built-in to tweak the
compositions it generates, without having to delve into the fractal
scripts; several such "variations" are included. Nothing fancy, but it's
eerie how "real" the music sounds (especially "Donna's Version
(Tweaked"). Obviously, it's freeware, but we'd appreciate any comments
or thoughts on sonic fractals. :-) Send comments to

Subject: [*] SkyChart-2000.0.sea.hqx
This mailing contains SkyChart 2000.0, a program for calculating and
displaying
the appearance of the night sky. SkyChart performs a number of astronomical
calculations that many other programs can't- for instance, with it you can see
how the constellations would look from Alpha Centauri, or animate them as the
stars move over thousands of years. It also performs more typical
calculations,
such as computing the positions of the sun, moon, and planets for any place
and
time.
SkyChart 2000.0 will run on any Macintosh with a math coprocessor. The
shareware
fee is $20.00. Please contact me at the address below if you have any

Subject: **** Don't throw away System 7 Desktop files - WARNING ****
Dear Netters,
If one does successfully throw away the Desktop DB, Desktop DF using the
option-empty trash command and cancel rebuilding desktop file
, a serious reprocussion may result! One will then
not be able to load their documents from their applications or double click on
the documents to load them to the appropriate applications. This message of
warning is only to those adventurous enough to try and rid their hard drive of
the load of a bloated Desktop file. If done, the icons will also turn to the
generic finder icons. This happens in System 7.0.0 on LCs. The desktop files
are necessary in System 7 contrary to some popular opinions. I know my
desktop file had grown to a MB, and I thought I could save space. It did
restore the MB, but I lost all of my double-click-document-icon abilities in
the process. In the end by rebuilding the desktop I was able to salvage the
old finder pointers, and get a 300K desktop file in its place.
Just a tale of one adventurous netter to save some others.
Sincerely,
ABRODY@VAX.CLARKU.EDU

3 questions for the price of one message! Wow!
1) Is it possible to run A/UX without an FPU on a IIsi? I tried, it
crashed, I used SoftwareFPU which did not help. Any ideas?
2) Is there any sort of term program which does Xwindows for Mac,
with, say, a 14.4KBaud modem?
3) I'd like to lock in the background pattern on a friend's LCIII.
(She goes to Stanfurd, me to Cal, those blue-and-gold C's look great
on her screen.) She knows little about her Mac (took her the better
part of 2 hours to figure out how to remove the C's in the first place.)
Any ideas on how to lock that screen in? Make General Controls invisible?
Change the patterns to have blue and gold only?

We are currently using the A3 mouse on each of two macs in our
office.
We picked them because we do CAD work, and were constantly bothered
by jumpiness when trying to precisely move them mouse. We don't
use the 3-button setting as a rule (we have all three buttons set
to mimic the regular mouse button), but we tried out the option.
It is very easy to set up and change (control panel) the "macros" for
each of the buttons. It stores key up and down events in the order you
type them.
All in all, this is a great mouse. Even if you don't use the three buttons
to the fullest of their capabilities.

Subject: Bad experience with MacCenter
I had a very bad and unpleasant experience with MacCenter recently, and I
thought I will share with the netters. Maybe a lot of people have had nice
experience with them, but as far as I am concern, one experience is enough,
and it does not have to get it twice to be hurt very badly.
I ordered an 8-meg SIMMs for Centris610 two weeks ago. Before I made the
order, I knew the price of the SIMM would be going up, and I shopped around a
lot to finally decided to get the SIMM from MacCenter, because the guy (name
Kr**) I dealt with quoted me a good price. I placed the order, and he told me
that I would get it two days later. I waited for two days, nothing was
received. So, I called the company, and asked for the guy. He was not there,
so another guy took the call. He checked my order, but couldn't find my name,
order etc. It was as if no order has been placed. At that time, the price of
the SIMM has already gone skyroketted. He would not offer me the old price
which I had placed the order, and insisted that I deal with the Kr**. So I
called, many times, and everytime I call, they would say that either Kr** was
on other sales department, or was not in the room, etc. I even left several
messages on the answering machine of Kr**, and had somebody to conveyed the
message to him, asking him to call back. He never did. Now, not only I have
to pay a higher price for the same SIMM which I originally planned, worst
still, I could not get it for a while because they are out of stock in many
mail order houses. It also decreses my productivity, because this is the time
I need the SIMM most. Again, decide for yourself when you have to do business
with MacCenter. As I said earlier, you may be happy with them. But with this
type of attitute and irresponsibility, it only takes one time, and hurts me a
lot, and I will never do any business with them anymore.

I'm trying to set up a script that will properly integrate Quickmail

However, I have severe problems getting binary mail to work. I

easy means of getting this to happen (well actually - no means at all
right now!).
Has anyone ever written Quickmail scripts that included binary mail?
I'd be very interested to see it - particulary if you managed to
write something to do with standard Internet-style mail.
Cheers,

Subject: info on macs-future and present
Dear Netters,
I am looking into buying another mac for our lab and would like to get some

white images from our microscope.
1. Does anyone know anything about the knew 'av' models that are
coming out in October? I think there is a Quadra 840 and Centris model.
How good are the frame grabbers?
2. Is the Centris the best computer for the job? I have a Quadra 950
a few feet away that is being used for electrophysiology, so if I want to
do anything really heavy I can send stuff there. Does the Centris support
standard NuBus boards?
3. What is the difference between the centris and the vx series (the
ones in the peecee looking box)? I know the centris comes with the
lobotomized 68040L chip. Do the others also?
4. What about upgrade paths. I have heard that it will be possible to
upgrade the Centris to the Power PC. Can the vx's be upgraded also.
5. I am also interested in the global port. Can older models like the
SE/30 and the Quadra 950 be upgraded or is there more involved.
If these questions have been addressed please point me to the info. I will
summarize anything that is new or different.

They sell iron on transfer toners in a variety of colors.
I called the company, and, through a *very* long voice mail
system (and very friendly human help), was informed that
they sell toner cart.s in 12 colors. They come in two versions,
regular and professional, for around $90 and $275 respectively.
I requested a sample printout, which they said they d send out.
They also carry various other related products, as well as publishing
a newsletter / magazine called Flash.
Since their help is so complete, I ll leave off here and suggest that

Subject: LC III Monitor Woes Fixed
Dear Net,
A happy ending to an otherwise strange saga. As from a few days ago, you
may remeber the following tale of strange horror:
>We have 2, one is an LC III 8/160 with a 14' Mac Colour Monitor the other
>an 4/80 with a Mac 12" Monochrome Monitor. This morning I booted up both
>Mac number one and terror struck. The screen had shrunk in display size.
>The black border that usually surrounds the useable display is now an inch
>and a quarter band at the top and bottom of the screen. The sides are still
>the same. Its as if my LC III has become a Mac Plus in regards to display
>size.
Well all you bright Mac Aces were correct. The problem was very simple.
The option in the Monitor Control Panel had been set from Macintosh High
Res. to 680X400, thus the loss in screen size. Upon further investigation,
it seems that a moron in the office had reset this paramater thinking a"
number setting" was better than a setting that had a name, thought that it
sounded more scientific. Well what can you expect from aold DOS head!!!
I didn't object to the experimenting, that is what a Mac is all about, it's
the fact of doing it on two different machines and then not mentioning that
little tidbit when all hell broke loose after they were booted up!
Anyway thanks to all who replied, it was as usual a great help!
Cheers,

It is possible to have a math co-processor installed in a 145. However,
the space for the math co-processor in the 145 is taken up by the
additional 2MB of ram found on board on the 145B. This is one of the few
differences between the two models.

Subject: memory upgrade - help (A)
Hi Dr. Silverstein,
Your decision of upgrading either Mac is going to be okay.
What I need to know is whether you have a video card driving your monitors or
are you using the Macs' internal video port for that purpose.
The reason whether you're using internal video port for your monitor is
because
the difference between these two Macs is that the LCIII has built-in VRAM of
512k where as the IIci does not. The IIci uses the on-board RAM for driving
the
connected display. If you are using the on board video then an increase of RAM
will give you a better performance on the IIci. The best way to configure your
IIci will be a video card pug into your NuBus slot; if one is free. As for the
LCIII you can increase the number of colours displayed on the attached monitor
by increasing the amount of VRAM. I think there is one free for an additional
256k.
This still does not answer your original question of which Mac you should
give the RAM upgrade to. Let me assume that you're using a video card to drive
both Mac's monitors. So an increase of RAM on either machine will let you have
better performance for most applications; by increasing the amount of memory
allocated for each application from "Get Info", and like you said have more
application running at the same time.
If running more applications at the same time is your goal, then you have to
decide whether you can have all the applications you want to run at the same
time, and all possible input and output files fit in a 80M drive with System
7.1. If no, do you want to use one of the many disk compression utilities to
increase the storage compacity of your IIci's 80M drive? If you decide to go
this route, I will suggest choosing an utility that does not require you to
reformat your drive. One such utility is AutoDoubler.
The reason I chose 80M as the criteria, is because that's the lowest common
denominator between the two Mac's. In my opinion the IIci is a much better
position machine for future enhancements from Apple or 3rd party. Almost all
3rd party vendors release hardware upgrades for the IIci first. Hence, you
will most likely have more and better choices in the future (I have a IIci).
This is why I think that you may want to spend your money on the IIci rather
than the LCIII.
Now lets talk about the Cache card you want to buy. IM cache card is not the
standard. I think 64k is the "standard" (a better word would be common). There
are many vendors who offer Cache card upgrades for your IIci, but your LCIII
can venture to that option also. Agian here you have to decide what you'll
be using your "primary" Mac for? What sort of application are you going to be
running? If speed improvements or upgrades to PowerPC is your goal then the
purchase of a Cache card will just add to your collection of dead weight.
I think this respond is long enough, if you need more info. please send me
email directly. As to where to purchase all this stuff. You can try your local
dealer or go with Mail Order. But if you go with Mail Order make sure they
have
a good money back or some sort of refund.
I hope all this helped you and not confused you even more.

The few suggestions I had so far indicated that the IIci with extra memory
and cache card would be the faster and probably the more
upgradable/expandable machine.
I would love to switch the large hard drive in the LCIII for the smaller
one in the IIci, as someone pointed out, but they are also physically
different in size (the 80MB hard drive in the IIci is thicker) and
according to my local apple rep they cannot be switched...
If anyone out there has another consideration or $0.02 to add, I would
appreciate it, as this is a major decision...

We have an Apple mouse of the old variety which exhibits the same problem.
I'm convinced it's not due to dirt - instead, it's the mouseball being
very light that is to blame, I think. Because it's so light, the mouse is
sort of imbalanced, and pressing on the button near the top end causes the
bottom end where the ball is to lift off the mousemat just enough that
contact between ball and mat is very poor. The mouse wasn't like this when
we got the Mac, but became that way just a few months later, and has stayed
like that ever since. Would be interesting to know if there's a simple fix!

There are nice mac interfaces to many internet services. For example there is

"WAIStation" which is a WAIS front end.

Netfind is a great way of finding the email address of peole when you know

Well, it's nice to get 3-D icons, and greys, but it's not as if the 160
has a 640x480 8 bit internal grey scale display. Definitely the main
reason for the extra cost (a bargain really, when you consider the cost and
hassle of PB display adapters) is the 16" color monitor support. Are you
_sure_ you aren't interested in video out? A color monitor on the 160 is
sweet, especially with the extra real estate of the built-in screen.
The 160 screen looks just like the 145 screen when set to B&W. I don't see
any extra trouble with submarining at any monitor setting, but the grey
screen is definitely more prone to streaking--the ghost lines that extend
>From window bars--mainly to say that the 160 display requires much more
adjustment of the contrast and brightness controls than is necessary on a
145. Finally, as you might expect, the greys on the 160 display are a bit
uneven near the corners and edges of the screen.
>- Is the 160 as easy to upgrade (install memory, 120M drive, modem) as the

upgrades?
The upgrades are pretty much the same, as far as I know, but I'm pretty
sure the 160 can take a bit more RAM. (My cheat sheet on this is out of
reach--is it 8MB vs 12MB?) That can make a real difference, such as when
using the RAM disk. Also, the 160's can be purchased with the 120MB drive
already installed. (Maybe the 145 comes with this size drive too, I don't
know.)
I've not opened one up yet--I don't have one that's out of warranty--but
>From what I've read, it can be a bit tricky, and I think a lot of people
who are good with tools are nonetheless opting to leave it to a qualified
(read legally responsible) board swapper. How's that for a long sentence?
>- Do both lose RAM disks when turned off?
Yeah, RAM disks are exactly the same on both. Does not survive ShutDown
the way the PB100 does. You can automate a restore however, with Quickeys
or the Maxima RAM disk.
>- Does the 145B and the 160 have similar battery life?
Yes, they does. :-) One interesting point here is that the 160 requires that
the power adapter be plugged-in when using an external monitor.
Hope this helps,

about a few things.
1) How the heck is the darn think cooled? As far as I can tell the only
cooling method used is natural air convection through the spaces in the
keyboard. Have there been any reports of overheating problems with power
books? It seems that when the Duo is docked, the heating problem (if there
is one) would be compounded...
2)How prone are powerbook hard drives to crash? With the amount of trans-

would be more prone to crash. I know that I'm not supposed to move the
powerbook when the drive is running, but doesn't carrying the powerbook

Just think. Apple is introducing a new high-end machine for the 1990s,

It is a popup selection (like the Prodos dialog) asking if you wanth the

800K GCR disks are vital but apple wants people to not use them so that
managers at apple will not all have to be fired after users are offended
at the new crappy MFM disk drives that cannot do GCR 800K recording. These
crappy drives are rumored to lack ejection motors as you all know, and
might or might not use the newly added (cyclone) interrupt for disk
insertions to eliminate polling.
Novices in computer labs at universities and libraries will accidentally
be reformatting valid 800K floppy disks **HUNDREDS OF TIMES PER DAY**
because the dialog box will probably still say "The inserted disk needs to
be initialized or is not a Macintosh disk blah blah blah" instead of "The
bean counting managers at Apple that are destroying Apple decided to remove
800K GCR floppy support from your PowerPC to save a little money, and hope

Rodime use a somewhat unsual caching scheme and you must use the

Apart from Rodime's own driver, the only other driver that I know of that

I have a Rodime 210 external formatted with HDT and have no problems
installing a system on to it or booting from it. In fact, until I got
my internal drive, this drive was my boot drive. Before that I had a
Rodime 100 on which I ran Sys 6 without any problems. I've had Rodimes
in one form or another since '88, on which I have installed over the
course of the years every MacOS from System 4.1 up and have never seen
the problems that you described.
Just in case my memory was playing tricks on me, a few minutes ago, I
installed System 7.1 on the Rodime from the developer CD, set it to be
the startup disk, and booted from it. I then set the startup back to my
internal HD, and booted from that without any problems.

I am using StuffIt SpaceSaver, the file compaction utility which

using SAM to protect my system. I believe they are in conflict.
When SAM kicks in to begin it's periodic checkup of my hard drive,
I get many error messages. They read (for instance):
>>Examined file 'Apple File Exchange' in folder 'Apple File Exchange'
An error has occurred while trying to examine this file
This file is probably not a valid resource file
or, another example:
>>Examined file 'MacCheckers 0.5' in folder 'Games'
An error has occurred while trying to examine this file
This file is probably not a valid resource file
These files are APPLICATION PROGRAMS compressed using
SpaceSaver. All the applications that I checked which were
compressed by SpaceSaver yielded that error message when
virus-scanned by SAM.
The other conflict I find is with READ-ONLY TEACHTEXT DOCUMENTS.
(The ones whose icons are Newspapers, not the ones that look like
papers with three lines of dots on them). Other TeachText
documents are not even scanned by SAM, but the "newspaper" ones
yield the error message (like this one does):
>>Examined file 'README' in folder 'Digital Camera 0.7b'
An error has occurred while trying to examine this file
This file is probably not a valid resource file
So, what do I do to eliminate the problem? SAM just doesn't
seem to recognize "SpaceSaved" applications and read-only TTexts.
Everything else seems okay.

Subject: Stop lab copying
One excellent option for stopping students from copying programs
in a lab setting is KeyServer. KeyServer is a "software licensing
compliance" program.
A program is "keyed" (i.e. a small piece of code is removed). The
key is stored on a networked mac. Any time someone tries to run the
keyed version, the client mac connects to the KeyServer and requests
the key. The application won't start if a) all keys are out (i.e.
all licensed copies are being run) or b) the client can't connect to the
server. The keys are small (>3k) and do not slow down the program launch
at least not that I can see (unless the server cannot be reached).
Copying from the lab could then be ignored, since the keyed versions of the
software would be useless without the key.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I always upload TidBITS in both .sit and .etx
formats to the Macintosh Hardware Forum's New Files library (keyword
MHW) each week. However, people like to receive TidBITS in email
much of the time, and in the past that's been a problem, since AOL
truncated the files at 25K (once you took the header into account
as well). Now AOL splits the files at about 14K, so you can get the
entire issue (or any large file), although you do have to piece it
together yourself if you wish to save it as a file for later browsing
with Easy View (which we HIGHLY recommend).
AOL still has two major Internet problems in my eyes. First, 2400
bps access is just ludicrous. They claim they're going to 9600 bps
any day now, but they've claimed that for years. I'll believe it when
I log in at that speed. Secondly, whenever someone leaves AOL without
signing off a LISTSERV (like the TidBITS LISTSERV), the mail is bounced
back with the error "Unknown AOL user" or something like that. The
problem is that the bouncing mailer doesn't identify the user! So
there's no easy way to tell which AOL address on the LISTSERV is causing
the problem. And since AOL bounces the entire 30K issue of TidBITS,
I get a ton of junk back.
Of course, most people don't have to deal with this latter problem,
but it's going to irritate list administrators to no end until they
fix it.
(and to stem the personal requests that always follow something like
this message, here's how to subscribe to the TidBITS LISTSERV. :-))

Subject: Trackball Problem (A) if it's an old Turbo "Mouse"
>Any ideas about a trackerball that stops working, and only starts to work
>again if it's unplugged and plugged back in again? Machine is a Quadra
>950, don't know the make of the ball.
Ah, yes. This is something that I meant to write about earlier, but you
know, no one asked and I forgot to post any info about it. And to think
that this is not anything that I have read about elsewhere!
Funny thing about the Kensington Turbo Mouse (a trackball) is that versions
prior to the current one (4.0) really suck the current. 150 ma. of it or
thereabouts. My 2 year old version 3.0 turbo mouse kept locking up on my
Q950. (BTW, I have read many many times that it is NOT a good idea to
disconnect and reconnect an ADB device while the computer is running--you
can fry your motherboard that way.)
It was fairly clear that the trackball was causing the problem. Weirdly,
the keyboard continued to function when the cursor hung. I called
Kensington and they politely suggested that I buy a new, version 4 TM. No
upgrade was available. :-(
Well, I ended up getting a new, Version 4 anyway, and retiring the old
"mouse" to an older Mac. The new one is a bit nicer in that it has
software selectable chording, and the ADB ports are much better located on
the back rather than the old side locations that sometimes made it
difficult to put it right next to the keyboard, where it belongs.
The interesting part of all this is is that I don't think they ever mention
the new low power draw (~10ma) of the new version. It's not on the box and
I don't remember reading about it in their ads. My guess is that they did
not want to announce that their old products were incompatible, and take
the heat for not offering an upgrade of some sort to their customers. Like
me. Instead, they touted the "smart mouse" feature where the cursor jumps
to a specific location--(I've got quickeys, why would I need or want "smart
mouse"?)

Subject: Western Digital (thanks)
Dear net,
This is a belated thanks to the people who helped me with my second hand
Western
Digital hard disk. (My host, y-net in Spain, has been down for a week.)
I am sending this to Info-Mac since I have had difficulty getting mail to some
of the people who sent messages.
Thanks to:
mikeg@asylum.gsfc.nasa.gov.us {Mike}
kc_quick@sunflower.open.ac.uk {Kevin Quick}
richard@mole.demon.co.uk {Richard Smith}
Kevin sent me version 2.0.1 of the Western Digital formatter. I installed the
driver from it and it ran a bit quieter, a bit faster (subjectively!) and with
fewer errors. Later, I copied everything off the disk and reformatted it. It
then ran much quieter, a bit faster again and with only one error since then.
(I
closed all the windows belonging to the drive and when I tried to reopen the
disk, I got a disk error. Hitting command-space (SCSI Probe for mount) made
that
problem go away.)
The formatter offered me interleaves of 3:1 for a 512KE, 2:1 for a Plus and
1:1
for anything later. As the disk had been attached to a Plus before (and is now
on an SE) the interleave change probably explains the speed up.
Richard sent me lots of info about how to check that it had indeed got
internal
termination, but as it has been working practically faultlessly, I haven't yet
opened the case to check. I have had it working in the configuration (because
it
only has 25 pin SCSI sockets):
MAC SE with internal HD ==== WD external HD ==== Syquest drive
with no external termination anywhere, and it worked. I don't know what that
proves.
Thanks again,

Subject: Word quits with error3 on Centris
Is there an incompatibility between Word 5.1 and a Centris 650 ?
I seem to remember that MS Word products don't run on 68040 Macs
without a patch from microsoft.
My friend's new Centris 650 reports that MS word quits with a
"type 3 error" when he tries to print. An error of type 3 is
apparently an illegal instruction.
Can anyone help.
Forgive me if this is a faq and thank you!

problems with 3.3 final.

You can always update your MPW using the backup command. I have the
following in my WorkSheet for easy reference:
backup -from 'E.T.O.:Tools - Objects:MPW:Latest MPW:MPW:' 6
-to "{MPW}" -a -c -r
This comes from the release notes (page 12). Of course, you cannot use
this to copy the MPW Shell itself because you need to be running MPW to
execute the commands. This merges new and updated files from the CD on
to your hard drive.

It does? The zoom positions are controlled by an environment variable
ZoomWindowRect, but you don't have it set, it zooms to the full height
of the screen, leaving a little room at the bottom. Seems very sensible to me
and it doesn't make my worksheet disappear. Has it by any chance zoomed off
to a second monitor that you don't have switched on?

I spoke to the local Motorola Semiconductor rep (who happens to sit in
our building :-) ) about the price issue. His comment was that the
loss of the epoxy supply will affect all IC manufacturing (at least those
that use plastic packages - most of the commercial/consumer electronics
markets); however, the DRAM market has the smallest margins so it will
be the most affected. Also, DRAM prices are no longer set by manufacturing
costs but more like the commodities market (pork bellies are down today,
meanwhile DRAM futures have doubled in the wake of an explosion...), so
many of th price increases in DRAM are not do to incresed cost but rather
due to a market scare. Watch for DRAM prices to peak in the next couple of
weeks due to the hysteria, then gradually return to present prices (+10% or
20%) over the next six months as the normal competitive market forces
take over.
